Hokkaido is known for its rich nature and diverse wildlife.

From the summit, you can enjoy a great view of the Daisetsuzan Mountains to the Tokachi Mountain range.

You can see unique plants and animals here.
I'll explain about them along the way.

There are many brown bears living in Hokkaido.

Brown bears are usually cautious and avoid people, but in recent years they've been seen more often near areas where people live and hike, so we need to be careful.

You'll also see many Ezo deer around here.

Animals here tend to be larger than those on the main island.

Red foxes are cute, but you need to be careful about echinococcus infection.

Please don't feed or approach foxes, and don't drink untreated stream water.

Brown bears, chipmunks, and pikas are found only in Hokkaido. We don’t have black bears or monkeys.

Interestingly, the animal distribution is clearly divided by the Blakiston Line.

It's a biogeographical boundary　that crosses the Tsugaru Channel from east to west, dividing the main island and Hokkaido.

Hokkaido is home to large birds such as red-crowned cranes,and white-tailed eagles.

Many birdwatchers from overseas visit East Hokkaido.

It's especially popular in winter because you can see migratory birds like whooper swans and Steller's sea eagles.

Red-crowned cranes live in Hokkaido and you can see them all year round in the Kushiro Wetlands and Tsurui Village.

Lake Kanayama is surrounded by Ezo spruce and larch forests, so it looks just like a natural lake.

This lake is home to the Itou, Japan’s largest freshwater trout.

The Teshio River is the fourth longest river in Japan with a total length of 256 km.

You can also enjoy canoeing in many other places in Hokkaido, including Lake Toya, Lake Shikotsu, the Kushiro Wetlands and the Kushiro River.

Let me briefly introduce Shikotsu-Toya National Park.

This park is formed around caldera lakes such as Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya, and many volcanoes.

Lake Toya is an almost circular-shaped caldera lake with a circumference of about 40km.

Lake Shikotsu is the second deepest lake in Japan,famous for its clear water.

The mountains are covered with mixed forests,including Ezo spruce.
