Hokkaido Jingu Tongu

A power spot popular for its blessings for love and childbirth

This shrine was built with materials from the Hokkaido Jingu Shrine (former Sapporo Shrine). It has the oldest guardian dogs in Sapporo and is blessed with good fortune for “easy childbirth and child bearing. The newer guardian dogs are believed by many women to bring good luck for “love fulfillment. The shrine has long been revered as “Tongu-san” by the local people, and serves as the departure point for the four palanquin carriages on the final day of the Sapporo Festival (June 14-16), which has been held since the Meiji era (1868-1912). The third Sunday in September is the Tongu Festival, when 400 people carry the portable shrine on their shoulders in a procession, and the shrine grounds are filled with stalls and performances.
