Sumiyoshi Shrine
Sumiyoshi Shrine continues to protect Otaru as the town's chief Shinto shrine. The grand Otaru Festival, Ezomikuji and Hanamizu are also popular.
This historic shrine dates back to 1864 when Shigeken Kikuchi, the priest of Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine, applied to the Hakodate Magistrate's Office as the general guardian of “otaru nai” and “takashima”. Every year from July 14 to 16, a grand annual festival (commonly known as the Otaru Festival) is held with around 200 stalls. At the shrine office, visitors can receive a papier-mâché mikuji, “Nisshin Tsukiji,” a local mikuji of Hokkaido with a motif of “Nishin” (herring). From April to October, the beautiful “Hana-Temizu” (flower water ceremony), in which flowers float in a water bowl, is held 10 times each year and attracts many visitors.
