Shiretoko Museum
Many clues to the history and nature of Shari and Shiretoko are on display
The Shari-cho Shiretoko Museum was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Shari-cho, and on the first floor, visitors can learn about the geological formation of the Shari/Shiretoko area and the lives of people over the past 20,000 years through a wealth of actual materials. On the second floor, dioramas, specimens, and video materials introduce the plants and animals that inhabit the World Heritage Site Shiretoko. The adjacent “Sister Towns Friendship City Exchange Memorial Hall” exhibits materials related to the culture of Taketomi Town, which is a sister town, and Hirosaki City, which became a friendship city due to a connection in the Edo period. A life-size reproduction of a Taketomi red-tile house and a kumi-neputa (a type of wooden float) associated with Hirosaki are well worth seeing! Both museums offer interesting lectures and valuable exhibits for the enjoyment of visitors, so be sure to check their official websites.
