Ubagamidaijingu Shrine/Esashi Ubagamidaijingu Shrine Togyo Festival
Participate in One of Hokkaido’s Oldest Festivals
Held from Aug. 9 to 11
The Esashi Ubagami Daijingu is Hokkaido’s oldest shrine, and the Togyo Festival held there has a history of over 370 years. The festival itself has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Japan and has its ancient origins in the yearly showing of appreciation for the plentiful herring caught during the fishing season. The festival is held over the course of three days in Aug., with thirteen floats that parade around town to festive music. Each of the floats has a specific history in Esashi and is treasured by the districts that make up the city. On the third and final day, these splendid floats, along with performers and spectators, gather together for one last unforgettable event.
