Lake Kutcharo/Lake Kutcharo Lake Water Festival

The northernmost area in Japan designated by the Ramsar Convention. It is a deformed gourd-shaped lake with two large and small swamps, called Onuma and Konuma, connected by a narrow waterway. It is an important stopover point for waterfowl migrating between Japan and Russia, and many migratory birds, including swans, come here to rest their wings. In addition to observing wild birds carefully at the waterbird observation center on the lakeside, you can also learn about the four seasons of Lake Kutcharo through photo panels and video screenings.

Held in early Jul.

There are plenty of fun attractions, including Hamatonbetsu Taiko drum performances, brass band performances by local students, raffles with luxurious prizes, and a log-crossing race on the water. At the fireworks display held in the evening, fireworks set off from the lake will light up the night sky. There will also be many food stalls selling local specialties, such as grilled scallops and scallop rice.
