Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway
Enjoy Stunning Views
The highest peak on Hokkaido, Mt Asahidake, stands at almost 2,300m and is the most imposing mountain in the jagged Daisetsuzan Mountain Range. Taking the Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway from Asahidake Onsen up to the 1,600m viewpoint is recommended. From this breathtaking vantage point, you can look down at the beautiful sight of Mt. Asahidake reflected on the Sugatami Pond below. The mountain is a treat to visit any time of year, and is especially popular in the fall, for having the earliest autumn colors in the entire country. For climbing enthusiasts, there is a short window of opportunity to summit the mountain (late June to early October). This is also the best time for admiring Asahidake’s alpine plants, which peak toward the end of July. The beauty of the flora earned this area the nickname kamui mintara, meaning “the garden where the gods live” in the language of the Ainu (Hokkaido’s indigenous population).
