Tenninkyo Gorge
Tenninkyo Gorge, located in the upper reaches of the Chubetsu River flowing from Mount Chubetsu on the southeastern slopes of Daisetsuzan National Park, is surrounded by columnar joints formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 30,000 years ago, offering picturesque scenery. The gorge is home to the iconic rock formation "Shichifuku-iwa," a wall of seven needle-like rocks standing tall towards the sky. These rocks are formed from pumice and volcanic ash that fused and solidified at high temperatures during the eruption. Other notable rocks include "Amatsu-iwa" and "Namida-iwa," which, during the autumn foliage season, create a beautiful contrast with the vibrant trees such as rowan and maple. Additionally, there is "Hagoromo Falls," selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls, where the autumn leaves coloring the cliffs are at their best in early October. (As of 2025, the walking path to "Hagoromo Falls" is closed.)
