Kamuy Kotan
Kamuikotan, called "Kamui (god) Kotan (village)" in Ainu language, has long been considered a sacred place for the Ainu people. Located on the border where the Ishikari River flows out of the Kamikawa Basin into the Ishikari Plain, this valley is a scenic spot with a 10-km stretch of oddly shaped rocks and bizarre stones. There is a suspension bridge across the river from which visitors can view the valley. The Kamuikotan Pit Dwelling Ruins, designated as a Hokkaido Historical Site, and stone circles are scattered throughout the area, indicating that a settlement existed here from ancient times. The area is also famous for its autumn foliage, and the Kotan Festival is held every year on the autumnal equinox. The Ainu culture is passed down through traditional Ainu ceremonies and dances.
