Matsumae Park・Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival
An Iconic Landscape of Pink
Japan’s northernmost castle town, Matsumaecho, retains the atmosphere of an Edo Period city, especially at Matsumae Castle and in Teramachi. It is also famed as one of Japan’s top 100 cherry blossom viewing sites, where its cherry trees seem to vie with the beauty of the castle. In the park, about 10,000 trees representing 250 varieties bloom. These include trees that bloom early, in mid-season, and late, so visitors can enjoy viewing cherry blossoms for about a month as each variety comes into full bloom.
Held in late April Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival
Not only is Matsumae Park home to the northernmost castle in Japan, but it is also home to one of Hokkaido’s most well-visited cherry blossom parks. Over 10,000 cherry trees fill the park with fluffy pink petals during the spring. The park is host to around 250 different varieties of trees, meaning that the flowers bloom at different times over the course of the short season. The Cherry Blossom Festival held at the end of April is the perfect opportunity to take in the beautiful scenery of Matsumae Park. With its traditional castle surrounded by cherry blossom trees in full bloom, visitors can picnic and relax in an idyllic wonderland of pink.
