Lake Abashiri
The evening view of the lake's surface turning bright red is also spectacular
Lake Abashiri has long been known as a scenic spot. Located southwest of Abashiri City, the lake has a circumference of 43 km. There is a 7-km-long promenade on a peninsula protruding from the center of the lakeside, which is ideal for bird watching and strolling. Around the lake are colonies of skunk cabbage ("mizubasho"), whose beautiful white flowers can be seen blooming from late April to early May.
Lake Abashiri is a production area for Japanese pond smelt ("wakasagi"). A hole is made in the frozen lake, a net is tied to a rope that has been trailed under the ice in advance, and the net is pulled in to catch the fish. Tourists can rent rods, traps, bait, and other equipment for an easy ice fishing experience.
