Lake Abashiri has long been known as a scenic spot. Located southwest of Abashiri City, the lake has a circumference of 43 km. There is a 7-km-long promenade on a peninsula protruding from the center of the lakeside, which is ideal for bird watching and strolling. Lake Abashiri is a production area for Japanese pond smelt ("wakasagi").
