Akanko Ainu Kotan
Come into contact with Ainu culture that has preserved and passed on its traditions
Lake Akan Ainu Kotan is one of the largest Ainu Kotan (villages) in Hokkaido, located in a corner of the hot spring resort area that stretches along the southern side of Lake Akan. About 120 Ainu people have inherited the traditional culture and actually live here. The Ainu Kotan has a wide range of facilities that allow visitors to experience the history and culture of the Ainu people, who have coexisted with nature, such as folk craft stores and restaurants, the Ainu Theater Ikoro, a permanent theater where performances of traditional Ainu dance, which is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, are held, and the “Onne Cise” art museum that houses unique and beautiful crafts.
