Hakodate St. John’s Church
Retro and graceful, thoughtfully designed with the cross visible from all angles
Built in 1874 as the first Anglican church in Hokkaido, St. John's Church has been rebuilt multiple times due to repeated fires in Hakodate. The current building was constructed in 1979. The white exterior walls adorned with crosses are striking, and the interior features a dome-shaped design. The holy light streaming through the stained glass windows with crosses makes you want to raise your hand in reverence.
In 2006, the newly constructed vicarage received the Hakodate City Urban Landscape Award, blending seamlessly with the church and the cityscape of Hakodate. Although the interior is not open for tours from around November to April, Sunday services, as well as concerts featuring jazz and piano performances, are held in the church two to three times a year.
