Cape Tachimachi
A spot with a spectacular view of the Tsugaru Straits from the cliff
Cape Tachimachi is located on the south side of Mt. Hakodate. Jutting out into the Tsugaru Straits, it was once a key location for monitoring foreign vessels.
The cliff, which rises approximately 30 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the Omorihama coastline, and on a clear day, a magnificent view all the way to the Tsugaru Peninsula and Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture. Also, from summer through autumn, visitors can enjoy the fantastic sight of fishing lights from squid fishing boats floating on the sea at night up close.
In summer, visitors are delighted by Japanese roses ("hanamasu"), Hokkaido's flower. At the store, which is open only during the summer season, salt-boiled whelks are popular. Bathing in the nearby Yachigashira Onsen is also recommended.
