Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura)
Travel back in time to pioneer days! Experience history in a vast open-air museum
Surrounded by the great nature of Nopporo Forest Park, “Hokkaido Kaitakunomura” is an open-air museum that reconstructs and recreates buildings built in various parts of Hokkaido from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. It was established in 1983 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Hokkaido.
The museum is a vast site of 54.2 hectares divided into four areas (urban area, fishing village, rural village, and mountain village), where 52 historical buildings stand side by side. Each of the buildings has a different atmosphere, and visitors can feel as if they were in Hokkaido at the time of pioneering the island. The village is not only about exteriors, but also about interiors and the way of life in those days, so you can experience the lifestyle and culture of the people of those days. To get around the large village, we recommend the horse-drawn carriage railroad in summer and the horse-drawn sleigh in winter. The view from the carriage is also exceptional.
Children can also enjoy “making traditional playground equipment” at the village's hands-on learning building. In addition to making the equipment, children can also play with it, and various seasonal and annual events are held to bring the old ways of life back to the present.
If you get hungry after walking around, take a break at the Kaitakunomura Restaurant. In addition to the famous “Imo-mochi” (sweet potato cake), the “Tondenhei Set Meal” with miso oden, pork miso soup, etc. is also popular.
