Rows of poplar trees/Rows of ginkgo trees

Beautiful natural scenery that has become the symbol of Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University is situated amidst a rich natural environment. The rows of poplar trees and gingko trees have become a symbol of the university. Poplar Avenue is a tree-lined path of about 80m and paved with wood chips. We recommend visiting it in summer when it is replete with fresh greenery, and also the magical snow-covered views in winter. There is also a Heisei Poplar Avenue on the northern side of the campus, lined with trees newly planted in 2000. Seventy poplar trees run in a long straight line along both sides of the promenade extending for about 300m. Beyond the lines of trees, one can see a pastoral scenery of cows and sheep grazing. Seventy gingko trees are planted along Gingko Avenue, stretching along a distance of about 380m. From late October to early November, the gingko trees create a beautiful sight with their yellow-golden arches. Visitors are also charmed by the view of fallen leaves covering the ground in a thick gingko carpet.
