Kotan hot spring
Where Hot Spring Meets Nature
Along the shores of Lake Kussharo, there are a number of open-air baths where visitors can bathe for free. Among them, “Kotan no Yu,” which is said to be a hidden hot spring, has been featured in many media as an open-air bath with a spectacular view of the lake surface turning golden at dusk and swans floating on the lake in winter.
The spacious baths, facing the lake and full of open space, are well cleaned by local residents. Although it is a mixed bathing open-air bath, separate changing areas are provided for men and women, and the bathtubs are separated by large rocks, allowing bathing in swimsuits or with towels wrapped around one's body. The surface of the water in the bath is about the same height as the surface of the lake, making it feel as if you are immersed in Lake Kussharo. The water contains high levels of metasilicic acid, which is considered an effective ingredient for moisturizing the skin.
