These large craters were formed in the area where people were living when the volcano erupted in 2000. They are called Yu-kun and Tama-chan after the separate readings of Usu (有 and 珠 which can be read Yu and Tama respectively).

Due to the 2000 eruption, the road, which had been on a downward slope, rose up, and rainwater collected in the hollowed-out area, forming a pond.
