Check before you travel! When is the best time to see lavender?
The best season for lavender in Hokkaido is said to be from mid to late July. The best time to see the flowers depends on the variety. There are two main types: early bloomers, which begin blooming in late June and are at their best from early to mid-July, and late bloomers, which bloom in early July and are at their best from mid to late July.
The “Okamurasaki” variety, the most widely planted in Furano, is at its best in mid-July and can be enjoyed until late July. Some varieties can be enjoyed until early August, but please note that some fields are harvested in August.
For the latest information on blooming, please visit the Furano Tourist Association website.
A sacred place for lavender! : Farm Tomita (Nakafurano Town)
Farm Tomita is the most famous lavender farm in Hokkaido. It is a 45-minute drive from Asahikawa Airport, a 5-minute cab ride from JR Nakafurano Station, and a 7-minute walk from Lavender Field Station, a temporary station where only the temporary train “Norokko-go” stops. Farm Tomita first became famous in 1976 when it was introduced in the calendar of the Japan National Railways at that time. It quickly attracted attention, and tourists began to visit the area from all over the country.
There are a number of flower gardens within the grounds of Farm Tomita. The “Traditional Lavender Field” is the origin of this flower field. The entire slope looks like a carpet of purple flowers!
Farm Tomita's representative “Field of Colors” is usually at its best from mid to late July. The purple lavender, white cassis, red poppies, pink komachi grass, orange California poppies, and other flowers color the gently sloping hills like a rainbow. The contrast with the bright blue sky makes for a great photo opportunity!
Lavender East, where you can enjoy the perfect location, is located in the Higashinaka district of Kamifurano Town, about 4 km east of Farm Tomita toward the Tokachi Mountain Range. It is one of the largest lavender fields in Japan created for lavender oil production, and visitors can watch the harvesting of lavender in late July.
Recommended for summer! JR Hokkaido special train "Norokko"
The “Norokko-go” is a trolley train that runs between Furano, Biei, and Asahikawa, operating only from June to October every year. During this period, a temporary station, “Lavender Field Station,” is conveniently located about a 7-minute walk from Farm Tomita, so why not take advantage of it? Enjoy the view of the Taisetsu Mountains in the distance and the soothing scent of lavender on the wind.
A spectacular flower garden spreading over the hills! : Flowerland Kamifurano (Kamifurano Town)
It is a popular sightseeing spot with powerful flower fields that make use of the vast land with a total area of about 10ha, and the contrast between the power of seeing the Tokachi-dake mountain range and the colorful flowers is wonderful. Whenever you visit during the flower season, you can enjoy it with a different expression.
You can enjoy the colorful flowers of the season from June to September, including lavender as well as vegetable-like chrysanthemums, red, yellow and white poppies and lupinas, sunflowers and red salvia. It is also recommended to take a walk on the pleasure car tractor bus that goes around the park.
When you visit Flowerland Kamifurano, please enjoy the famous "Lavender Soft," which has a refreshing scent of lavender and a refreshing taste!
The largest lavender field in Furano : Highland Furano (Furano City)
The Highland Furano Lavender Field is one of the largest in Furano City. At the three adjacent "Lavender Forests" promenades, you can enjoy forest bathing while listening to wild birds, enjoy the pleasant scent of lavender, and take a walk to suit your mood. Also, from the open-air bath with a panoramic view of the lavender field, you can enjoy watching lavender while taking a hot spring bath.
A view spot overlooking the Tokachi Mountain Range : Hinode Park Lavender Garden (Kamifurano Town)
The town-owned lavender fields spread out on the gently sloping hills are filled with bright purple color and fresh fragrance from late June to early August. The park was one of the first tourist parks to plant lavender, and is loved by tourists and locals alike.
As you walk up the gentle promenade leading from the parking lot to the observatory, the view opens up. To the west are lavender fields dyed in purple, and to the east are the rural landscape of Kamifurano and the Tokachi Mountain Range. There is also a monument called the “Bell of Love” at the observatory, where many couples ring the bell to pledge their love to each other and have their love fulfilled. ......

Lavenders overlooking the city Horomitoge Lavender Garden (Sapporo)
Located about 20 minutes by car from downtown Sapporo, Horomitoge is a scenic spot overlooking the city. During the lavender blooming season (early July to late July), visitors can enjoy a beautiful collaboration with the view of the city.
Since Horomi Toge is also a famous night view spot of Sapporo, you can see the city lights over the lavenders, and dusk is also a good time to visit!
How about a reaping experience (for a fee) as a memorable part of your trip? The studio also sells handmade essential oils and other products.
Lavender picking experience ! Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill (Sapporo)
Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill, famous for its statue of Dr. Clark, is also a famous lavender viewing spot. 1,200 ㎡ of the hill is planted with lavenders. The best time to view the lavender is around July, when the purple blossoms are set against the surrounding white birch forests, a scene typical of Hokkaido!
In mid-July, visitors can try their hand at harvesting lavender for free, and we recommend taking the lavender home to make dried flowers or potpourri.
Collaboration of Lavender and Big Buddha⁉ Makomanai Takino Cemetery Big Buddha Statue (Sapporo City)
A new landmark in Sapporo City that has recently been attracting attention on social networking sites! It is the “Big Buddha Head” statue towering over Makomanai Takino Cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in Hokkaido. Designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, it made its debut in the summer of 2016. Because it is a park cemetery, it is an easy place for tourists to visit.
The Great Buddha Head peeking its head out from the top of the hill is surrounded by tens of thousands of lavender plants in summer. The mismatch between the blooming lavender and the head of the giant Buddha is a popular topic of conversation, and every year on weekends and holidays in July, a lavender festival is held for a fee.
The promenade “Wind-scented Prayer Path” offers a closer look at the face of the Great Buddha Head. Why not spend some time purifying your mind with the solemn Tou Daibutsu and lavenders?
Red Roof Mark Kurose Lavender Garden (Sunagawa City)
"Kurose Lavender Garden" offers views of Mount Pinnesiri from Lavender Hill, where lavender is planted on about 1.3ha hillside, taking advantage of the mountain slope. It is recommended to take a picture from below with a trademark pavilion with lavender and red roof spread all over. It's a cute picture that looks like you've wandered into a secret flower garden.
Around 1980, the owner of the Kurose farm started planting lavender as a hobby. There is also a direct sale of fresh vegetables at the kiosk in the parking lot, so you need to check this as well.
