Experience the history and culture of kelp with the locals

Shikabe Town is an area with a thriving fishing industry, and its origins lie in kelp. The abundance of kelp produces a large amount of plankton, creating an environment in which a variety of seafood can be caught. Learn about the impact of kelp on the ocean and its history from local fishermen, try your hand at making home-cooked meals with local mothers, and deepen your relationship with the local community. Also, why not learn practical rope work skills from local fishermen that can be used in times of disaster, and experience local wisdom for yourself?

ITINERARY

8:20 Tour Starts

Gather at Roadside Station Shikabe

8:30 - 9:30 Environmental learning with the theme of kelp and introduction to the history of kelp

Location: Roadside Station Shikabe Intermittent Spring Park

・Learn why kelp is abundant in Shikabe.
・You will deepen your understanding by learning about the history of kelp, which you will see up close and even eat.

9:45 - 10:45 Rope work experience at Shikabe Park

Learn about the benefits that forests bring to the ocean. Local fishermen will teach you about rope work, which is useful in times of disaster, and is the wisdom of fishermen that once you tie it, it won’t come undone, and when you untie it, it will come undone quickly.

11:00 -12:00 Kelp fishing experience (on board)

・Visit a kelp farm from the boat, which is the biggest product of Shikabe Town, which has a thriving fishing industry. Comes with a souvenir of kelp.
・We will see how kelp is cultivated, which is the reason why we can catch an abundance of fish.

12:20 -15:30 Experience how to make delicious soup stock and cooking

・You will learn how to make delicious soup stock in Shikabe Town, which is rich in kelp. ・You will also compare the tastes of miso soup made with dashi stock from the ground up and miso soup made with miso stock.
・You will cook lunch using the dashi stock you have made. The lunch will be prepared with local mothers using fish and shellfish caught at that time. You will start by preparing the fish and then eat the dishes together with everyone.

Examples of dishes you can experience:
・Boiled flounder
・Miso soup with young scallops
・Kombumaki made with early-picked kelp

・By cooking and eating local food in local homes, you can experience real life and deepen exchanges. The greatest appeal of this tour is the opportunity to interact with people you would not normally come in contact with.
