The Yellow Handkerchief (Kofuku no Kiiroi Hankachi)
Eastern Hokkaido area

Yusaku Shima (Ken Takakura) has just been released from six years in prison. He happens to run into two young people, Kinya (Tetsuya Takeda) and Akemi (Kaori Momoi) and travels with them on a journey to reunite with his wife Mitsue (Chieko Baisho). Before Yusaku was released, he sent Mitsue a letter saying "If you have not found somebody new, hang a yellow handkerchief in the garden." And so he sets off, wondering what he will see when he arrives. In this timeless classic, the stories of the three companions' lives and struggles unfold on the road from Abashiri Station to Yubari, with 1970s Hokkaido as a backdrop.

Abashiri Prison Museum
Abashiri Prison was built in 1888, when Abashiri was a small fishing village with just 631 people. Buildings that were used over 100 years ago are now exhibited in this open-air museum. In 2015, the radially structured prison house where the prisoners were held, the central guard house of the original Abashiri Prison, the administration building, the lecture hall, and the buildings of the Futamigaoka Branch were designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. In the Kangoku Cafeteria, you can try the food that is served to inmates at Abashiri Prison today.
