Umineko-Inseparable (Black-tailed Gull - Inseparable)

Born and raised in Hakodate, Kaoru Noda (Misaki Ito) lives an uneventful life with husband Kunikazu Akagi (Koichi Sato) in the fishing village of Minami-Kayabe, working with him to fish for kelp. Then one day, Kunikazu's younger brother Hirotsugu (Toru Nakamura) upends her whole world. This tale of Kaoru's forbidden but unstoppable passion was a sensation. The film likens her love to the black-tailed gull, whose flight will not be deterred by the harshest of snowstorms or the fiercest of headwinds. An adaptation of a novel by the same name by Sapporo-born Shiho Tanimura, this romantic drama is an epic story of love in adulthood.

Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church of Hakodate

Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church of Hakodate

First built in the Motomachi area in 1859, this was Japan's first Russian Orthodox church, serving as a place of worship for the Russian consulate. The church that stands today is a rebuild from 1916. The gorgeous contrast between the white walls and green roof stands out from the East-meets-West streetscape all around, and the pealing of the bell is famous in the community, who have dubbed the church "Gangan-dera (Clanging Temple)". It appears in the film as the church Hirotsugu attends to get inspiration for a madonna and child picture he wants to draw in Kaoru's likeness.
