    Former Hokkaido Government Office Building (Red Brick Office)

    Hokkaido's original government office was opened in 1888. Its American-style neo-baroque architecture is epitomized by the octagonal tower on the roof, a symbol of independence and progress. Around 2.5 million bricks were used to build the distinctive outer walls. The building has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Note: This building is closed until March 2025 for large-scale renovations.

    Seven flights arrive here from Tokyo each day, with a flight time of around 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Tokachi area, where this airport is located, is one of Japan's largest agricultural areas. With many confectioners, including the locally headquartered Rokkatei, this area combines gastronomy with great scenery.

The area of northern Hokkaido served by this airport is packed with amazing places to see, including Mt. Asahidake, Sounkyo Gorge, Daisetsuzan National Park, Furano, and Biei.

    The gateway to Hokkaido's northern tip, providing access to spots such as Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. The flight times from Tokyo and New Chitose Airport, respectively, are around two hours and around one hour, making New Chitose Airport a useful stopover to reach Wakkanai from other areas of Japan.
