Northern Soya – Hokkaido’s northernmost area has two islands, Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. This area faces the Sea of Okhotsk to the east and Sea of Japan to the west; surrounded by abundant nature in the form of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park and the like.
Wakkanai City, Rishiri Island, Rebun Island have different feature. Rishiri Island is well known for Mt.Rishiri which is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Rebun Island is called “the floating island of flowers” and is home to approximately 300 types of alpine plants. In Wakkanai, there is a vast area of nature such as the soya hills which are periglacial landforms maked during the Ice Age, and the “White Road” made by effectively using scallop shells. There are plenty of spots where you can enjoy the scenery and gourmet food to your heart’s content.

Wakkanai
Wakkanai – Hokkaido’s northernmost town. With high temperatures from 22-28℃, the climate here is cool, comfortable, and perfect for a pleasant summer trip. Wakkanai is also the gateway to Sakhalin, which lies 43 km across the Soya Strait. Rishiri Island
The name of the island “Rishiri” originally derives from “Ri-Shiri”, of which meaning is “the island with a high mountain” in the language of the native Hokkaido people Ainu.
Rishiri Island, formed by repeated volcanic eruptions. The island is characterized by the independent peak Mount Rishiri with dotted ponds around the mountain and lovely alpine flowers including rare species indigenous to Rishiri Island.
Mt.Rishiri is the symbol of RIshiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park and one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains.
It’s a mountain that attracts many people who can enjoy frest walking, climbing, and camping in the summer, and backcountry in the winter.

Rebun Island
Rebun Island, isolated from the mainland ancient times. This is a miracle island because of natural landscapes carved during long years and as many as 300 types of flora flourish on the land between May and September.
