In the area around Mt. Meakan and Lake Onneto you can see wild and pristine beauties. Explore Mt. Meakan, Meakan Onsen, and Onneto Yunotaki Falls, which are hot-spring waterfalls with rare manganese deposits, and observe rich plants and wild animals along popular hiking trails. Though the road from Meakan Onsen to Lake Onneto is closed between December and April, it is still accessible on snowshoes or cross-country skis.

Lake Onneto
This scenic lake at the foot of Mt. Meakan in Akan-Mashu National Park is called the “Lake of Five Colors” because it appears to change color, shifting between hues of blue and green depending on the weather, wind, and time of day. There is a campground on the lakeshore, and the area has four walking trails. There is also an observation deck with panoramic views of the water and surrounding mountains. Please note that water sports are not permitted.
Mt. Meakan
At 1,499 meters, Mt. Meakan is the highest peak in the Akan mountain range. This composite volcano consists of 10 peaks, and is home to steaming Pon-machineshiri Crater and alpine flower meadows. It takes three to four hours to reach the summit from the numerous trails in the area, but the reward is a 360-degree view of the park’s volcanic landscape.
