Dashi tourism
Long ago, a fisherman landed in Hokkaido in search of high-quality kelp. The town of Shikabe has its roots in the rich kelp growing here. Located at the foot of an active volcano, Mt. Komagatake in Hokkaido, the town has suffered damage from numerous volcanic eruptions, but it has been able to recover and thrive using kelp as a valuable source of income. Today, kelp is an indispensable ingredient in Japanese soup stock. Visitors can experience the production site of such kelp, interact with producers, and enjoy local cuisine.
Shikabe Onsen
The Oshima Peninsula, where the town of Shikabe is located, has many hot springs and is one of the most geothermal areas in Japan.
In 1666, Ito Gengoro, visiting from Tsugaru (Aomori Prefecture), encountered a lone deer healing its wounds in a hot spring. Gengoro, a believer in the Kashima Myojin, established a hot spring resort here, which eventually became known to many people as Shikabe Onsen. This is said to be the origin of Shikabe Onsen.
Roadside Station Shikabe Geyser Park has a facility with the Shikabe geyser, which has been selected as a Hokkaido Heritage Site, and the Shikabe Onsen Steaming House, which uses hot spring water.
