ASAHIKAWA – DAISETSUZAN NATIONAL PARKDestinations
All the seasons are treasures to behold
“Daisetsuzan National Park” is the largest national park in Japan including Mt. Asahidake which is the highest mountain in Hokkaido.,
The environment and ecosystems unique to the cold and alpine regions create distinctive landscapes, such as large colonies of alpine plants and the earliest autumn leaves in Japan.
Asahikawa city, located in the Kamikawa basin formed by the rivers flowing from Daisetsuzan National Park, is the hub of this area and its population is approximately 330 thousand.
Thanks to rich nature resources, Asahikawa city has developed primary industries such as agriculture and forestry, and secondary industries such as local sake, soy sauce, and furniture manufacturing.
The rice and fresh vegetables harvested in this area, sake brewing and nationally famous “Asahikawa Furniture” are gifts of the blessings of Daisetsuzan National Park.

The roof of Hokkaido, Daisetsuzan National Park
Asahidake, the highest mountain in Hokkaido. Every year, many mountaineering enthusiasts visit the highest peaks of the 2,000 meter-class mountains that make up the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group. One unique feature is the “Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway”, which runs from base station to Sugatami station (1600 meters above sea level) and provides visitors with easy access to the mountain.
Vivid autumn leaves
The scenery of Daisetsuzan National Park in fall, where the mountain surface is painted in a mosaic pattern of vivid colors such as red, yellow, and orange, is a must-see. Unlike mainland of Japan, bright colors such as yellow and orange stand out, and you feel as if you have wondered into a world of folklore story.
