Okhotsk Culture
It is said that approximately 1300 years ago (The Yayoi Era in Japanese history), the Moyoro people, one of the northern minorities, migrated from the north to this region. They traveled south on kayaks and sometimes crossed drift ice in search of abundant natural resources, and finally reached this area.
They had a unique lifestyle known as the Okhotsk culture. At that time, they created a very rich food culture using fresh seafood like salmon, oysters, clams locally caught and agricultural produce like barley roasted or boiled.
These were found in the ruins called the Moyoro Shell Mound at the mouth of the Abashiri River.
