OVERVIEW
The town of Shibetsu in the Nemuro region is known as the Mecca for salmon. For more than 10,000 years, salmon has played a crucial role in the lives of the people here. On this tour, you can experience the story of salmon and people through kayaking and walking in the spectacular natural scenery of the Notsuke Peninsula.
On the first day, you’ll learn about the ecology and history of salmon at the Shibetsu Salmon Museum and really feel the passion that the locals have for it. The next day, you’ll head to Notsuke Bay, overlooking the World Heritage Site, Shiretoko, and take a leisurely sea kayak excursion through this paradise of waterfowl which is also registered as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Feel the sea breeze while experiencing the rich ocean where Odaito’s specialty shrimp are found. That same afternoon, you’ll take a stroll around Notsuke Peninsula in time with the changing tides. Observe deer footprints and eelgrass while searching for traces of the people who once lived here. On the final day, you can experience the wisdom of people who make full use of salmon. Visit a facility where salmon is processed into dried flakes, and enjoy the craftsmanship and taste of it by making your own soba noodles with a salmon broth.

DAY 1
Embark on a journey that follows the history of salmon-human coexistence
After meeting up at Nakashibetsu Airport, you’ll head to the Shibetsu Salmon Museum first. Here you can learn about the ecology and history of salmon to discover just how much it is valued by the local people. Enjoy some regional cuisine for dinner and unwind in the hotel’s hot springs before spending the night there. Everything you see on this day will build excitement for the natural experiences to come.
DAY 2
Have fun in Notsuke Peninsula, a paradise for birds and rare wildlife
In the morning you’ll be able to experience sea kayaking in Notsuke Bay, with a view of the World Heritage Site of Shiretoko. Take your time as you paddle among the waterfowl and take in all of the vibrant nature. In the afternoon, you’ll take a stroll around the Notsuke Peninsula in time with the changing tides. Here you can encounter rare plants, eelgrass (the ocean’s source of nutrition), deer tracks, and 10,000-year-old ruins while imagining the lives of people who once lived here. Finally, enjoy some more wonderful local cuisine for dinner.
DAY 3
Savor salmon to the fullest
The final day of this excursion will show you the wisdom of using salmon to its fullest by visiting where dried salmon flakes are made and using it to create a soup broth for soba noodles that you’ll make yourself to enjoy for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll head back to Nakashibetsu Airport, where everyone will go their separate ways with fond memories in tow.
