Experience dynamic volcanic terrain, unique coastal landscapes, and wildlife sanctuaries within East Hokkaido, witness the coexistence of nature and humans from up close. With a dedicated support vehicle at all times, guests can adjust the distance of activities according to their preference. A grand adventure awaits, for guests of all ages and abilities, ready to be shared together.
ITINERARY
DAY 1
Feel the power of the ancient earth
Meet at either Abashiri Station, Kitami Station, or Memanbetsu Airport, and travel to the cycling course start in the support vehicle. (Approximately 40 minutes)
Morning:
Downhill cycling from Bihoro Pass around Lake Kussharo, approximately 1.5 hours / 16km.
Begin with majestic views of Lake Kussharo from the rim of its caldera, where once a mighty mountain once stood. Safely trace down the snaking roads of the caldera’s rim at ease, enjoying the scenery at ease. Build bonds as a team and immerse yourself in the Hokkaido landscapes.
Picnic Lunch by Lake Kussharo:
Enjoy handmade sandwiches and seasonal fruits while taking in the views of Lake Kussharo.
Afternoon:
Kayak over the crystal waters of Lake Kussharo around the Wakoto Peninsula to a secret volcanic steam vent, a location inaccessible by land. Experience pure onsen waters deep within nature. Kayaking last approximately 1.5 hours.
Cycle from Wakoto Peninsula to Mount Iou, approximately 2 hours /24 km
Navigate the primeval forests at the basin of the caldera. Along the way, stop at the beach and dig a into the earth to expose natural onsen waters to warm your feet. Later, at Kawayu Visitor Center (closed on Wednesdays), learn about the formation of this ancient land from a professional nature guide. Understand how the locals learned to coexist with harsh volcanic landscapes and these blessings of nature are produced deep within the ancient earth. Finish the cycle tour with a dramatic approach towards Mount Io, a powerful sight with thick steam rising up into the air from a extraterrestrial landscape. Following the tour, the support vehicle will transport guests to the hotel.
DAY 2
Search for wildlife hidden among unique seascapes
After enjoying a buffet-style breakfast, board the support vehicle and head towards Shibetsu Town.
Morning:
Cycle from Shibetsu towards Todowara, approximately 1.5 hours / 20km
Head towards the end of the earth across the unique Notsuke Peninsula, a natural sandbar teeming with wild birds which make their home in the rich wetlands. On the left, guests can view Kunashiri Island, on the right, spot majestic Hokkaido deer, red foxes, and wild birds. Seasonal flowers also dot the landscape. Finish cycling at the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center.
With the support from a experienced nature guide, take a walk through the Todowara area, learn about the rich plant life and coastal terrain. Finish the walk at the pier near the tip of Notsuke.
Afternoon:
Notsuke Bay Cruise, approximately 25 minutes.
Board a chartered boat and return to the Odaito fishing port on the mainland. Between June and October, guests may spot seals playing in the ocean.
Lunch at the Shibetsu Salmon Park and visit the local Salmon Science Museum.
Enjoy a salmon steak and learn about the history of Shibetsu, nicknamed “Salmon Town,” a Japan Heritage site. The museum explains the history of salmon fishing dating back to the Edo period. Learn the story of this richness of nature and the relationship between the people who live off its bounty. Afterward, head to Kushiro via the support vehicle, approximately 2 hours.

DAY 3
Learn the mystery of the tranquil wetlands
After buffet style-breakfast at the hotel, take a train to the Kushiro Wetlands, approximately 20 minutes.
Morning:
Kayaking in the Kushiro Wetlands (Hosoka to Iwahogi), approximately 1.5 hours / 8km
Disembark the train to see the majestic Kushiro Wetlands stretching to the horizon. Listen to the guide’s explanation on wetland conservation efforts at the Hosoka Observation point. Kayak down the Kushiro River which slowly snakes throughout the wetlands. Along the way, see Hokkaido deer, waterfowl, and soaring eagles throughout the pristine and primeval landscape. After, board the support vehicle and ride about 30 minutes to the next destination.
Morning:
Countryside cycling approximately 30 minutes/ 5km
Cycle through the beautiful rural landscape of Tsurui Village, with some gentle hills, you’ll reach a small restaurant located atop a hill in this quaint village, making it a perfect and relaxing conclusion to your cycling adventure.
Afternoon:
Lunch at a local restaurant
Enjoy a warm welcome and delicious dishes made by the owner’s family. A heartwarming moment where guests will enjoy experiencing the hospitality of local residents. To celebrate the end of the journey, and the memories made along the way, enjoy a toast of sparkling wine on the terrace with breathtaking view. Through conversation, learn about the family that owns this restaurant, their love for the outdoors, and stories about growing vegetables. Feel connected, deeply, to local residents and nature concluding the theme of the tour. Afterward, take a support vehicle to Kushiro Airport (approximately 40 minutes away)
